The Yanchep Rail Extension is a 14-kilometre expansion of the Joondalup Line, extending rail services from Butler to Yanchep in Perth’s northern suburbs.

Delivered by the NEWest Alliance, a joint venture between DT Infrastructure and CPB Contractors, the project is part of the Western Australian Government’s METRONET program. METRONET represents Perth’s largest public transport investment, aimed at creating a better-connected city with more transport, housing, and employment opportunities.

Located 56km north of the Perth CBD, Yanchep and surrounds is one of Australia’s fastest growing areas. Jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian governments, the extension was designed to provide more than 150,000 future Yanchep-Two Rocks residents with efficient transport options while easing pressures on existing road and rail networks.

The project delivered three state-of-the-art stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep, each featuring parking facilities, bus interchanges, cycling infrastructure, and passenger amenities. It also included nine new road-over-rail bridges and major traction power upgrades to support long-term network capacity.

Scope

DT Infrastructure delivered a comprehensive package of railway construction works for the Yanchep Rail Extension, ensuring the new line, stations, bridges and associated infrastructure were fully integrated, safe and operational for public use.

  • Delivered 14 kilometres of new dual-track rail, extending the Joondalup Line from Butler to Yanchep.
  • Constructed three new stations, Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep, including station platforms, passenger amenities, parking, bus interchanges, cycling facilities, and standard station systems to provide safe, accessible, and efficient transport hubs.
  • Completed station access integration works, including roads, utilities and civil works with the surrounding transport network.
  • Constructed nine new road-over-rail bridges.
  • Modified Butler Station into a through‑station and integrated with extended line.
  • Augmented traction power supply by upgrading Nowergup Substation from a one‑transformer site to a two‑transformer site.
  • Installed new signalling, communications and power systems.

Social impact

The Yanchep Rail Extension has lasting social, environmental and economic benefits for Perth’s northern coastal region, such as:

  • Community Growth: The new stations unlock surrounding residential and commercial land, creating new housing opportunities directly linked to major infrastructure and services.
  • Culture and Identity: Nine integrated public art pieces are featured across the stations, celebrating the cultural, historical and environmental identity of the local area.
  • Environmental Care: Three green fauna bridges, the first of their kind over rail in Western Australia, provide safe crossings for native wildlife and maintain habitat connectivity in the Ningana Bushland. In addition, 500 grass trees were carefully relocated during construction and replanted post-completion as feature landscaping within station precincts.
  • Accessibility and Inclusion: Stations incorporate universal design principles, including lifts positioned outside high-traffic areas, audio loops to support hearing-impaired passengers, and full compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
  • Noise and Vibration Management: Ballast matting was installed in residential and commercial areas to minimise operational noise and vibration.
