The METRONET Thornlie–Cockburn Link was completed in June 2025 after four years of delivery by the NEWest Alliance.

Delivered for WA’s Public Transport Authority, this landmark project has transformed Perth’s public transport network by delivering the city’s first east-west cross line connection. As an Alliance member, DT Infrastructure played a critical role in seeing the project to completion, enhancing connectivity across the metropolitan area. The new line is key to supporting economic growth by providing more efficient access to employment hubs, recreational precincts and entertainment destinations.

The project created 1,700 jobs while delivering large-scale infrastructure improvements, including the construction of the new Nicholson Road and Ranford Road stations and major upgrades at Thornlie, Cockburn Central and Perth Stadium station.

Scope

DT Infrastructure was engaged to deliver an extensive scope of works:

  • Constructed two new major train stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road, complete with station infrastructure such as parking, bus interchanges, passenger amenities, cycling facilities, and station systems.
  • Duplicated 2.4 km of railway between Beckenham and Thornlie stations.
  • Built 11.2 km of new duplicate passenger railway linking Thornlie Station to Cockburn Central Station railway.
  • Relocated railway infrastructure, widened the centre-to-centre distance, and built a new dual track passenger railway for 3.2 km on the Perth to Mandurah line.
  • Constructed approximately 11 km of a new dual gauge freight line and relocated approximately 11 km of one of the existing dual gauge freight lines.
  • Completed Traction Power Supply Augmentation for the extension to Cockburn Central Station, including upgrades from a one-transformer site to a two-transformer site and the addition of two outgoing feeders.
  • Completed Perth Stadium Station modifications.
  • Modified Thornlie Station into a ‘through’ station.
  • Built a new platform at Cockburn Central Station.
  • Duplicated the Canning River Rail Bridge.
  • Constructed a new six-lane bridge at Ranford Road, including demolition of the existing four-lane bridge.
  • Constructed the Elliot Place footbridge to replace the pedestrian level crossing.

Social impact

DT Infrastructure’s delivery of the project generated significant social and community benefits, including:

  • Recipient of the Aboriginal Engagement Award at the 2025 Civil Contractors Federation (WA) Industry and Training Awards.
  • 100% of team members completed Cultural Awareness Training within the first four months of the project, with over 2,000 personnel gaining a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture and heritage.
  • Around 1,700 local jobs created during the project.
  • More than $85 million in contracts to First Nations businesses, representing 5% of the project’s total contract value.
  • 99 Indigenous employees delivered 563,000 hours of work across the life of the project.
  • Increase capacity at Radford Road Station to accommodate approx. 2,350 daily boardings by 2031, offering a 29-minute journey to Perth.

  • Modernising Transperth’s signalling and train control technology to a digital solution, with upgrades to signalling along the total length of track on the Transperth network.
  • Installation of more than 7,000 transponders enabling precise train location.
  • In-cab signalling equipment for 125 trains including the Prospector, AvonLink and Australind regional trains.
  • Improved passenger information with more than 600 displays at 87 stations across the network.
  • ⁠Installation of more than 250km of electrical conduit.
